Well-watered

I was reading through Psalm 104 this morning, which is all about God’s authority over, and provision for, all of creation. I was struck by this line, in verse 16:

“The trees of the Lord are well-watered”

It reminds me of one of my favourite passages in Isaiah:

“The LORD will guide you always; he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame.

You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail.” – Isaiah 58:11

How often do you feel ‘well-watered’, freshly filled with life and able to flourish? Or perhaps you feel more like you’re living in a sun-scorched, barren land, trying your best to survive, rather than thriving?

Whichever of these categories you fall into, what an encouragement that God provides richly for all of His creation – from the tiniest, microscopic, deep-sea dwelling creature, to the majestic birds of the sky, and the grass covering the mountains or valleys. How much more then, does He provide richly for us! What a delight that He provides for our needs so abundantly that He transforms us from withered and sun-scorched, to well-watered and overflowing (like in Psalm 23)!

I so firmly believe that as we worship, pray, and trust in His provision for us each day, we receive that living water afresh. As we fix our eyes on Him to provide for all we need – physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually, financially… - He gives us His Spirit to sustain us and help us to persevere in our worship, prayer and trust.

As you reflect on this, maybe these few pointers could be helpful:

  • How do you feel today? Well-watered, or a little sun-scorched and thirsty?

  • What do you need for today? God provides richly and generously for all of His creation, including you!
