The Lord has done great things!

I was reading my Bible this morning, feeling slightly distracted and like I was just going through the motions – familiar? Towards the end of my quiet time, I read Psalm 126, and was particularly struck by this verse:

“The LORD has done great things for us, and we are filled with joy.” (v3)

The Lord has done great things…. It’s something we’re familiar with from what we’re told by wise friends, from what we sing each Sunday, from what we read in the Bible and perhaps have been taught from childhood. Yet, it’s something I don’t think deeply about or reflect on often enough.

The wonderful thing that caught my attention here, is that this verse is sandwiched between tales of God’s people being in captivity, and those who still ‘sow with tears’ and ‘go out weeping’. This led me to reflect that God’s ‘great things’ aren’t the same as society’s ‘great things’. God’s great things permeate through hard seasons, losses of loved ones, political or financial instability. They don’t lessen the impact or difficulty of those things, but give us a constant reason to say “The Lord has done great things!” – whether we’re in a great season or a pretty gnarly one.

So, I want to encourage you today, whatever season you’re in, to declare “The Lord has done great things”, inspired by the same Spirit who allowed God’s people, fresh out of captivity and still grieving, to say the same!
