Yes and Amen!

I’m sure you’ll agree, it’s been such a delight to see so many of our readings and liturgy translated into Spanish, Cantonese and now Farsi, too! I’m always so moved when we all pray a hearty ‘AMEN!’ at the end of prayer time, and it struck me that whatever language we are praying in, and whatever country people are from, the language of agreement (‘Amen’) is always the same! What a joy it is to agree and affirm God’s promises to us as a united church, full of different languages, nationalities, cultures and church experiences!

In Paul’s second letter to the Corinthians, he says:

“For no matter how many promises God has made, they are “Yes” in Christ. And so through him the “Amen” is spoken by us to the glory of God. Now it is God who makes both us and you stand firm in Christ”

2 Corinthians 1:20-21a

When we worship, we celebrate God’s promises, which have been achieved for us (“Yes”) through Jesus’ death on the cross, and declare the “Amen” that God is who He says He is. As we agree on this together and are confident in what He will do in and through us, our “Amen” is all for His glory. As well as glorifying God, in His goodness He sends His Spirit to use our worship to remind us of His character, stir up faith in us and empower us to live hopeful lives despite our circumstances.

What do you feel God is calling you to declare “Amen” to today? What promises are you believing He will fulfil, and how can you pray into that this week?
