Ministry Team

Steve Silvester // Rector

Steve is a Mancunian but Nottingham is has been his adopted city since marrying Jane in 1985. He has been Rector of St Nic’s since 2008 and started City Prayer, a city-wide prayer and unity movement, in 2015. He is also Area Dean of South Nottingham, supporting the 25 Anglican churches in the deanery, and an honorary Canon of Southwell Minster. Steve and Jane have three adult daughters and one granddaughter.Steve enjoys road cycling in an attempt to compensate for his equal love of good food!


Garreth Frank // Curate

Garreth moved to Nottingham in order to serve his curacy at St Nic’s, after being ordained in July 2017. Previously, Garreth grew up in rural North Wales before moving, heading off to York to study History and Politics. After graduation, he spent two years working as a student worker for G2, a ‘fresh expression’ church linked with St Michael le Belfrey. Garreth loves walking alongside people exploring what it means to follow Christ and be part of his church and has a particular passion for ministry amongst millennials. Outside of church, Garreth enjoys reading, running and heavy metal, and is passionate about Arsenal FC and the Welsh national rugby team.


John Blakeley // Curate

John is the newest addition to the St Nic’s Staff Team! Prior to training for ministry at St Mellitus in London, John was a teacher at the Nottingham Emmanuel School for 12 years. John is married to Lynda and they have two teenage sons. John enjoys running, cycling, reading and playing the guitar, though not all at once!

Ian Paul // Associate Minister


Ian worked in industry before training for ordination in Nottingham and doing a PhD in the interpretation of the Book of Revelation. He spent nearly ten years in parish ministry in Poole, Dorset, and another ten in theological education (training future ministers) back here in Nottingham.

Since 2013, Ian has been an independent speaker and teacher covering a range of contexts. He writes and publishes what is probably the most widely-read blog in the Church of England at www.psephizo.com. His passion is to help the church to hear what the Spirit is saying through the Scriptures, so that we are all resourced for our walk of faithful discipleship. Ian can be contacted on matters related to his work outside St Nic’s at editor@grovebooks.co.uk .


Fran Finn // Ordinand

Fran is training for the priesthood, while continuing with her work as a broadcaster. She’s been based in the East Midlands for twenty years, working for the BBC as a radio presenter, and Notts TV as a presenter/producer. She is on placement at St Nic’s, leading and preaching at services and learning from our team. She’s a musician and motorbiker, but not at the same time!


Lynda Blakeley // Ordinand

Lynda is training for the priesthood with St Mellitus college in London.  As part of her training she is on placement at St Nic’s which is wonderful as she is married to our curate John.  John is her soul mate and source of all her laughter lines!  Lynda has two boys who are her joy and a journey of discovery after her childhood with three sisters.  Lynda has worked in the city centre for 5 years at the Malt Cross so is delighted to continue working in a city that she loves.  She has a heart to encourage others to see themselves as God sees them as knows her self what a life giving discovery this is.


Emily Huggard // Students Minister

As a vicar’s kid, Emily spent a lot of her childhood moving house the Midlands area and Lancashire. She moved to study music at the University of Nottingham in 2013 and quickly settled at St Nic’s. After graduating in 2016, Emily worked with the Nottingham university Christian Unions as a Relay Worker with UCCF for a year before beginning her role at St Nic’s in 2017. She is passionate about seeing students come to know Jesus and seeing them grow in their relationship with Him. Emily is excited to get married to her fiancé Jonno in April 2019 and, when not working or wedding planning, enjoys socialising with friends and gentle walks that end in coffee shops!


Rich Wood // Children & Families’ Minister

Rich was brought up in Surrey on a TV-starved diet of Classical music, card games and tennis (all of which he still loves including TV!). He moved to Nottingham from Poole, Dorset with his wife, Laura, and 3 children (Martha, Leah and Isaac) in November 2018 after 20 years teaching because the family heard God’s call to step into Children and Families work. Rich believes that Jesus came to give us life to the full, and church is a great place for life and fun. He and his family love being part of the church family at St Nics.


Ben Lees // Worship & Creative Media Lead

Ben is our Worship and Media minister and heads up our musical worship and creative media teams. He is Nottingham born and raised, and became a Christian here at St Nic’s before leaving to train with Worship Central in 2012. Since then, he’s been working at churches up north in West Yorkshire leading and serving within worship, youth, and student teams. Ben is engaged to Isobel and they’re very much looking forward to their wedding at the beginning of June.

Jon Holt // Operations Manager

Mike Kirk // Administrator

Mike is Nottinghamshire born and bred. He is married to Caroline (also from Nottinghamshire) and they have two girls. Mike worked in systems development and installation for Siemens until 2009 when he went and trained as a primary school teacher. Mike joined the staff in May, 2013. Mike is a keen cyclist and runner, and plays in a Big Band.


Laura Jowett // Communications Manager







Laura grew up in Huddersfield but came to Nottingham in 2014 to study Business Management at Nottingham Trent. She came to St Nic’s as a student, and after graduating in July 2018 she completed an internship year with the Younger Leadership College at St Nic’s. Laura runs our social media accounts and is passionate about a good Instagram post (!), she is also a bit of a brunch connoisseur!

Abi Blane // Worship & Youth

Abi has grown up in Nottingham and has been attending St Nics her whole life. She just finished taking her A-Levels at Bluecoat and is currently doing an intern year with the Younger Leadership College focusing on worship and youth. Her main interests revolve around music, and spending far too much money on concert and theatre tickets!


Jack Coombs // Students

Jack is originally from Basingstoke but came to Nottingham to study Physics at The University of Nottingham. During his time as a student, he was involved with the student work at St Nic’s as a member of the student team in his final year of study. Having now finished studying, he is interning for the year, working alongside Emily to focus on helping grow the student work at St Nic’s. Jack enjoys playing the bass, especially if it’s something funky, as well as making pizza.
