Who's who

Our Staff Team

St Nic’s is governed by the PCC who are the church’s trustees, and we also have a leadership team who work with the rector to set the vision and long-term strategy of the church.

Steve Silvester (rector)

Steve Silvester

Steve has been Rector since January 2008. Steve says, “I originally came to Nottingham when Jane and I married in 1985 – and we’ve been here ever since. I’m finally getting the idea that God has called us to this city!” After training at St. John’s, Nottingham, Steve served an extended curacy in Mapperley where he planted ‘The Well’ and then led St Luke’s, Gamston, through an extended period of growth.

Steve and Jane have three adult daughters. Jane is a secondary school teacher, as was Steve before ordination. Their day off is Friday, which they normally spend walking, followed by a ballroom dancing lesson.

Steve’s wider leadership responsibilities include being Area Dean for Nottingham (South), serving on Bishop’s Council,  leading City Prayer and being an Honorary Canon of Southwell Minster. In 2014, Steve went on a three-month sabbatical. You can read about his sabbatical on his blog.

Garreth Frank

Garreth moved to Nottingham in order to serve his curacy at St Nic’s, after being ordained in July 2017. Previously, Garreth grew up in rural North Wales before moving, heading off to York to study History and Politics. After graduation, he spent two years working as a student worker for G2, a ‘fresh expression’ church linked with St Michael le Belfrey. Garreth loves walking alongside people exploring what it means to follow Christ and be part of his church and has a particular passion for ministry amongst millennials. Outside of church, Garreth enjoys reading, running and heavy metal, and is passionate about Arsenal FC and the Welsh national rugby team.

Ian Paul

Ian Paul

Associate Minister

Ian worked in industry before training for ordination in Nottingham and doing a PhD in the interpretation of the Book of Revelation. He spent nearly ten years in parish ministry in Poole, Dorset, and another ten in theological education (training future ministers) back here in Nottingham.

Since 2013, Ian has been an independent speaker and teacher covering a range of contexts. He writes and publishes what is probably the most widely-read blog in the Church of England at www.psephizo.com. His passion is to help the church to hear what the Spirit is saying through the Scriptures, so that we are all resourced for our walk of faithful discipleship. Ian can be contacted on matters related to his work outside St Nic’s at editor@grovebooks.co.uk .

Jo Tatum

Jo Tatum

Occasional Guest Leader and Preacher, Workplace Chaplain

Jo is from Nottingham but spent much of her adult life on Guernsey. Jo and husband Brian raised a family in the Channel Islands and came to Nottingham to enable Jo to train for ordination at St John’s College. Jo was curate here at St Nic’s from July 2012 to July 2016. Jo now works for the diocese as Workplace Chaplain but still worships at St. Nic’s when she can.

Emily Trood

Student Minister

Having first lived in Nottingham aged five to seven, Emily moved back to the city to study music at university in 2013. After graduating in 2016, she spent a year working with UCCF as a Relay Worker for the Christian Unions in Nottingham, where her love for student ministry grew. She joined the staff team at St Nic’s in September 2017, having attended the church throughout her time at university. When not working at St Nic’s, Emily teaches music to under-fives. Outside of work, she enjoys socialising with friends and trying out new coffee shops!
